Manicure + Pedicure = Entrepreneur
A former banker takes her teenage daughter's advice and charts a new career.

For Tessie McKinney the pressure of being a business owner isn’t all that different from her former life in the banking industry.
"I was a banker and escrow officer,” she said. “In that career, I know what stress really is, so my goal is for our customers to step away from their hectic daily routines and enjoy the zen ambiance while having their overworked and under pampered hands and feet feel rejuvenated."
"My daughter, Arian, is the inspiration for my shop,” Tessie continued. "I kept telling my daughter that someone should open up a nail spa that has a serene ambiance with prices that are affordable. My daughter then exclaimed, 'That someone should be you!' And, that is how I followed my dream to open Arian Nail Spa, named after my beautiful daughter (pronounced AHH-REE-UN). I opened Arian Nail Spa November 18, 2010 and this is my very first business."

“She’s been playing competitive volleyball since she was 12 years old, and we traveled the country attending tournaments,” said McKinney. “As a bonding experience for us, I would treat her to pedicures or a massage at spas or nail shops that were located close to the tournament venues.”
“So, needless to say, I've seen from the best of the best to the traditional walk up nail salons,” said McKinney. “During these get-a-ways, I would find myself observing the atmosphere, customer service, and ambiance of the spa or nail salon. In the high-end spas, I always felt pampered and relaxed with the exception of my wallet. After leaving a traditional nail salon, I usually didn't have the feeling of rejuvenation yet my wallet didn't seem to feel much of an impact."

McKinney also feels that Downtown Benicia has much to offer. "The eclectic shops, beautiful marina, and a sense of community are just a few of the many reasons I wanted my spa located here," McKinney explained. "I felt that having a nail spa downtown would be a nice addition to First Street. Our clients leave here looking and feeling wonderful and afterwards they can shop at the boutiques, treat themselves to ice cream or even go out and dine. Best of all, they are supporting our local businesses."
As the interview came to an end, McKinney talked about her philosophy for Arian Nail Spa. "The purpose … is to provide a zen setting while one's hands and feet are pampered with natural and eco-friendly products. We, also showcase a local artist, Laura Hering, who provides us with pieces that give and organic feel," said McKinney.
