Moms Talk Q&A: Shopping for the Prom Dress

Benicia High's prom is less than three weeks away and the heat is on.

school girls and their moms are scrambling to find the perfect prom dress. As always, the pressure is high so shopping can be fun yet frustrating for moms and daughters.

The first challenge is agreeing on the appropriateness of the dress. Luckily, standards for acceptable attire are outlined in the school's Prom Memorandum that students must sign before purchasing prom tickets. The language regarding attire standards is very specific.

  • Dresses must be no shorter than fingertip length. (refer to photos posted on campus and on the BHS website)

  • Bare midriffs and plunging necklines are not allowed.

  • The back of the dress may not be lower than the natural waistline.

  • No see-through material which exposes thighs, excessive cleavage or midriff.

  • Slits may not be higher than fingertip length.

  • That just leaves the issue of cost, which has been known to cause strife and tears. Prices start at $39 at Kohl's and Macy's, which are having sales on prom dresses. At the high end, red-carpet style designer gowns run up to $650 at formal dress boutiques.
