Moms Talk Q&A: The Cost of School Supplies

The cost of back-to-school is on the rise.

Moms and dads are busy this week buying school supplies as the quickly approaches. By now, most have their list of necessary supplies from the school.

If you have a fifth grader at Mathew Turner, the list includes things like hand sanitizer, paper towels and highlighter pens along with basics like notebooks, paper and pencils. You can expect to spend anywhere from $60 to $70 just on school supplies.

A new backpack, lunch box and water bottle will cost you another $50. Then the kids need new clothes and shoes, which can add up to another $150 plus, depending on your child's fashion needs. Be prepared for tears and door slamming.

If you have a Benicia Middle School or High School student, the list is longer. If your kids play sports, do cheerleading, dance or play in the band, get out the checkbook for uniforms, outfits and equipment.

It's become expensive to get the kids ready for school. We've come a long way from just needing a few Pee-Chees and gym shorts.
