New Local Business Promotes Women’s Safety and Self-Defense
Emergency room worker saw the need for women to protect themselves so she found a way to provide the products.

Shawna York decided to try her hand at selling personal protection products for women after looking at a Facebook page for Damsel in Defense. York is now selling the company’s products – primarily pepper sprays, stun guns – at personal protection parties.
“A lot of women want them but don’t know how to get them,” said York while sitting outside a local coffee shop. “I can come to their homes and teach them how to use them.”
The array of items York pulls from her purse is impressive in terms of the damage they can do to would be attackers and are designed to look like they belong in a woman’s purse. Pink lipsticks that are actually pepper spray and a million volt stun gun that on first glance could be confused for a hot pink cell phone.

“One in five women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes,” said York who also works in a hospital emergency room. “I see a lot of women who come in the emergency room who’ve been battered, so I know there’s a need for these products.”
York’s web page has a complete list of available products as well as contact information.
