Officials ID Man Shot After Allegedly Aiming Assault Rifle At 2 Vallejo Cops Inside Starbucks

BREAKING: The 41-year-old Suisun City suspect's 2-year-old son was shot -- possibly accidentally -- earlier in his home.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA – Vallejo police have identified the man who allegedly tried to shoot two police officers who were inside a Starbucks Sunday night as Adam Powell, 41, of Suisun City.

Police said Powell attempted to assassinate the two officers, who were on a coffee break, around 8:50 p.m. inside the Starbucks at 199 Lincoln Road West. Powell had a semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle with a 70-round magazine and a loaded handgun, police Lt. Jeff Bassett said.

Powell was at a window outside the coffee shop when he pointed the rifle at the two officers and appeared to be trying to manipulate it as if it had malfunctioned, Bassett said.

The two male officers, a corporal with nine years of law enforcement experience and an officer with 13 years experience, drew their weapons and pursued Powell through a parking lot west on Magazine Street, Bassett said.

Powell continued to manipulate the rifle before he was shot three times by the officers near Magazine and Sheridan streets, Bassett said. The officers are now on administrative leave, Bassett said.

Powell was taken to a local hospital where he was in critical but stable condition this morning, Bassett said.

Around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Powell was also in a home in the 1000 block of Canary Court in Suisun City where his2-year-old son was shot, Bassett said.

Powell left the house before paramedics and Suisun City police arrived and before his son could be attended to, Bassett said. Suisun City police said preliminary information indicated the shooting was accidental and
self-inflicted but they are still investigating the shooting.

The boy was in critical but guarded condition at Oakland Children's Hospital this morning, Suisun City police said.

Powell has had numerous contacts with law enforcement and served time in prison for robbery and drug offenses, Bassett said.
