Pancake Menu for Benicia Middle School Students at Red Awning Café

The first day of school for some students at meant chocolate chip pancakes and mugs of cold milk.  For others it was blueberry pancakes and for the those kids who like the dependable breakfast there were good old fashioned pancakes.

The is open Monday through Friday at the and offers middle school students a safe place to gather before school, get some breakfast and if need be, finish their homework.

The food is served by volunteers.  The kids eat cold cereal every day but Wednesday when they get pancakes.  And that mug of milk. “On busy days we’ll go through seven gallons of milk,” said Henning.

According to Scott Henning, a Pasteur at the church, it costs about $4,000 a year to provide the food.  Most days, between 70 and 150 kids will drop in for breakfast.  This year the teachers at the middle school passed the hat and raised about $1,300 and Valero has also pitched in $1,000.

“The money from the teachers is our single biggest donation,” said Henning.

Those wishing to make donations of either food or money can drop them off at the First Baptist Church.
