Panther Band Fired Up All Over Town

Events call for duty in several corners of Benicia

For a mere 13 hours, the had the candle lit at all three ends, with several events going on at the same time. It helped that the tour happened within the confines of Benicia, making it easier for band members to attend every event where they were needed.

The triple header started Saturday, Sept. 24  at 9 a.m., as the band participated in the Parade on First Street.

The parade honored years of noble volunteerism within the Benicia Volunteer Fire Department. The Panthers were honored to take their place among antique cars, fire equipment and even a bagpipe player.

For many of the new band members, their nerves didn’t show, even though this was the first time marching publicly as the new 2011 band.

Their practice session at Fitzgerald Field included the National Anthem, causing baseball parents and some local residents to stop and have a listen. The high point came as it was performed in front of the officials’ stand.

Hearing the anthem outdoors seemed to catch people off guard with its poignant and solemn moment; accompanied by the waterfront flags, palm trees and gentle waves in the background. A non-band audience member finished for them by punching the quiet air with, “The BHS Panther Band Rocks!”, bringing forth applause.

Next off, many members of the band leadership group found themselves enjoying some time with the Viking Marching Band.  The Vikings were having their own band camp, and the high school students pitched in to help mentor, guide and even show the proper way to hang up marching uniforms.

Days like this help to unify both band programs, since they share so much common ground. Several touching moments were caught as the high school band members looked at their own young selves on the photo wall, realizing how far they’d come and how much fun they had where it all began.

Rounding out the day was the longest event of Saturday, held at the high school. This was the 12-hour Scrapbooking Fundraiser, sponsored by the Panther Band and organized by two parents, Elaine DiStefano and Trisha DeCosta, who already serve heavily by holding board positions within the band. But when volunteerism is paired with passion, the fundraising is not the only benefit. There was a nice showing of attendees. The band members appreciate all chances to connect with the community, and are always buoyed by all the Benicians who follow the band’s progress.

The Panthers will have their first official competition this coming Saturday, Oct. 1, in San Jose at the .  They’ll be bringing their top game as they compete on the street and in the concert venues.  You can also hear them at this Friday’s varsity football game at the high school.
