RIO VISTA , CA — One-way traffic control is scheduled nightly on the Rio Vista Bridge on state Highway 12 as the $37.1-million Rio Vista Bridge Preservation Program continues, Caltrans advised this week. Partial overnight closures begin at 7 p.m. and end at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday on a long-term basis, according to Caltrans District 3 Spokesman Dennis Keaton.

One lane is open during the ongoing maintenance work, and the bridge remains safe for travel, Keaton said.

The Rio Vista Bridge Preservation Program involves two construction projects. The first called for cleaning and painting the drawbridge, as the coating system was deteriorating at various locations of the bridge.

The second phase involves refurbishing mechanical parts considered worn and due for replacement, including electrical equipment, elevator parts and the restroom facilities.

"A Caltrans contractor and structural engineers continue second-phase work of the project as the painting phase is nearing completion," Keaton said.

Depending on traffic volumes and the number of bridge lifts for waterway traffic, motorists can expect delays of up to 20-25 minutes.

"Current truck restrictions will apply," Keaton said. "California legal trucks having a kingpin-to-rear-axle of more than 30 feet are not recommended on State Route 160."

Weather conditions could delay or cancel scheduled work.
