Passenger Traffic Up At Oakland Airport

"When flights are added at OAK, both local residents and visitors will immediately respond by filling them," said one official.

The Oakland International Airport is experiencing an overall increase in customers, as it saw more passengers board flights last year than the previous year, airport officials said Thursday.

Having received 11,205,063 passengers in 2015, compared to 10,336,788 passengers in 2014, the airport is experiencing an upward trend with 8.4 percent total annual growth, according to airport officials. Based on percentage, the airport has become the fastest growing airport in the Bay Area, airport officials said.

The upward trend is consistent with increases in passenger traffic every month when compared to the same month the prior year for the past 25 months, airport officials said.

“The San Francisco Bay Area, as a region, is doing very well right now. Continued growth at Oakland International Airport reflects that and also it clearly demonstrates that when flights are added at OAK, both local residents and visitors will immediately respond by filling them,” the Port of Oakland’s acting aviation director Kristi McKenney said in a statement.

The growth is also attributed to the nine additional nonstop destinations that were added to the airport’s route map last year.

The new nonstop destinations include Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans, Houston, Omaha, Columbus, Nashville, Baltimore-Washington DC and Tijuana, Mexico. Currently, 13 different airline brands are housed at the airport, offering service to 53 destinations both domestic and international, according to the airport.
