Proper Pronunciation is Often Personal

How do you pronounce the name of this fine town where we all live and play?

How do you pronounce Benicia?

Are you a Beneesha person or do you go with Bunisha?  Or maybe you try to go with the Castillian Spanish pronunciation and add a /θ/ ( a th sound) -Benithia- to your pronunciation.

Does it matter how you pronounce the name of our town?

My father would tell me, "in a hundred years no one will care how you pronounced the name of Benicia."

So, why should I care?

Everyone has a way of doing things.  Zoey (the love of my life) always unbuckles her seat-belt just as she's pulling into the garage.  I always spread the mayonnaise over the whole piece of bread before adding mustard.

Sometimes I see people doing things that annoy me (pulling to the forward pump is on the list of things to be discussed in this column).   Sometimes I see people doing something one way and I wonder how they got in that habit.

When you grocery shop do you load in the milk first or last or somewhere in the middle of the trip?  Why?

Think of this as an editor's curiosity about the human condition or an easy way for all of us to get better acquainted with each other.

If you ever wonder why people do a thing a certain way, send me an email about it and I'll post your question.

So, are you Beneesha or Bunisha?
