Replica of Famous Vessel to be Built in San Francisco

The original was built in Benicia by Matthew Turner.

121 years ago famed Benicia launched the Galilee, the most famous of the 228 ships vessels he built.  The Galilee still holds the record for the fastest passage between San Francisco and Tahiti by a wooden sailing ship – 21 days.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Alan Olson of Sausalito, the director of the nonprofit group Education Tall Ship for San Francisco Bay, is heading up an effort to build a modern replica of the Galilee.

The ship will be built and moored near the site of Turner’s original boatyard in San Francisco.  Turner moved his boat building venture to Benicia in 1882 and launched the Galilee in 1891.
