Time to Set a New Fitness Goal

Bike the Bridges for Special Olympics is June 12 and starts at the Martinez Waterfront Park.

If you participated in Sunday's  for the Benicia Education Foundation, you may be asking yourself what now? Maybe you slept in and missed out on all the fun. Either way, you need a new goal to stay fit. It’s time to take the bike out of the garage, dust it off and start training for another good local cause.

on June 12 provides a great opportunity to train for a beautiful ride — a family-friendly bicycle ride starting and finishing at Waterfront Park in Martinez. The course will consist of a 25-mile loop that will take riders across scenic Carquinez Bridge and the new Benicia Bridge.

If you have completed theride, and need an additional challenge, consider a metric century this year, a 65-mile bike ride. If you are into dirt, it also offers a mountain bike ride.  So there are no excuses not to participate.

The Bridges is one of my favorite rides – I can leave from my house in Benicia, ride some beautiful country roads and complete a 25-mile loop without having to backtrack.

I have spoken to many locals who aspire to complete the Bridges bike ride. Take charge, set the completion date, June 12, and start training. You’ve got eight weeks to do it. Your Fitness Coach is here to help you with a training plan to complete your goal.  Check Benicia Patch each week for training tips.

Knowing how to change a tire also is important. Have all your tools and a spare tube with you when riding – Wheels in Motion can help with this.  Attached is a great video clip on how to change a tire.

No Drop Ride – Benicia Bike Club

If you are new to cycling and want some tips and support, the offers a no-drop ride the first Saturday of the month. We meet at the state park West K entrance at 9 a.m. We ride to the Martinez Starbucks and back via the Benicia Bridge. If you are up to it, part of the group rides the Bridges 25-mile loop.  A no-drop ride means we will not leave you behind. Fellow cyclists will stay with you until the end of the ride. The next event is May 7.

Now get out and ride.  Happy trails!
