Turkey Safety Zone: Solano County Photos Of The Week

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — Early in the month of the November, Patch reader Wendy Meineche of Vallejo spotted this pair of wild turkeys hanging out at Glen Cove near Benicia State Park. They must've known it was the month of you-know-what holiday and hightailed it for a safety zone such as a state recreation area. Also working to their advantage was the fact that wild turkey hunting season in California is typically in the spring.

Wild Turkey Fun Facts

According to the California Department of Fish & Wildlife:

"The statewide population of wild turkeys is estimated at 240,000 birds. CDFW estimates about 36,000 hunters bag about 28,000 turkeys in the spring season each year statewide. Wild turkeys are found in most counties in California, with the top 10 for spring harvest being Shasta, Butte, Placer, El Dorado, Tehama, Sonoma, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada and Lake counties."
