BREAKING: The officer was looking for a burglary suspect. The bicyclist was transported to a Fairfield hospital.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA – A bicyclist is in critical condition after a collision with an American Canyon police car in Vallejo early Thursday morning, American Canyon police Chief Tracey Stuart said.

Officer Erik Olson was looking for a burglary suspect in a black car that was last seen heading toward Vallejo around 1 a.m. when his patrol car struck 59-year-old Victor Doporto, 59, of Vallejo, on a bicycle at Sonoma
Boulevard and Yolano Drive, Stuart said.

A witness said the bicyclist was crossing the intersection on a red light. The witness also said the bicyclist was wearing all dark clothing and there were no lights on the bicycle, Stuart said.

Vallejo police are investigating the collision. Olson has been on the police force 11 years, according to Stuart.

The burglary report turned out to be an incident involving a Land Rover that was stolen in January in Mill Valley, Stuart said.

The Land Rover was last seen heading to Vallejo before the collision between the bicyclist and patrol car. It was dumped at a hotel, Stuart said.
