Vallejo Man Killed In I-780 Crash; DUI Suspected, CHP Says

The fatally injured man was the passenger in a Land Rover that crashed off a Vallejo -area onramp Thursday night, CHP says. (Breaking)

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — UPDATED: The Solano County coroner's office has identified a person who died in a vehicle crash Thursday night in Vallejo as Salvador Bustos, 43.

ORIGINAL POST: A 43-year-old Vallejo man died in a suspected DUI crash Thursday night when the Land Rover Discovery SUV he was riding in plunged off an Interstate Highway 780 onramp, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened at about 9:15 p.m. as Faafiu Faafiu, Jr., 43, of Oahu, Hawaii was driving his Land Rover at an unknown speed eastbound from Glencove Road and drove off the roadway in a northeasterly direction, CHP Officer David Harvey stated in a news release.

The SUV went down an embankment and rolled multiple times before coming to rest in the number-two lane of I-780, where it was struck by a Chevrolet sedan driven by an 81-year-old Benicia man, Harvey said.

Faaifu and his right-front passenger, whom authorities had not identified as of Friday, were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle, Harvey said.

The passenger suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Faaifu, who suffered moderate lacerations to his head and right knee, was taken to John Muir Medical Center for treatment. He was arrested at the hospital on suspicion of DUI and felony manslaughter, Harvey said.

The Chevy driver escaped the crash uninjured, according to the CHP.

The crash remained under investigation Friday; anyone with pertinent information was asked to call CHP's non-emergency line at 800-835-5247 or Officer W. Parker at the CHP Solano Area Office at 707-428-2100.
