UPDATE: Graffiti Referring to Islamic State Closes Vallejo School

Spray-painted graffiti referring to the Islamic State group closed a Vallejo elementary school on Thursday, a police lieutenant said.

At about 7:20 a.m., a custodian found the graffiti on the rear wall of a classroom building on the east side of Elmer Cave Language Academy, located at 770 Tregaskis Ave., Lt. Herman Robinson said.

The graffiti, which said “ISIS” and threatened to blow people up, also included drawings of male and female body parts and local gang symbols that investigators believe indicates the crime was committed by juveniles, police said.

In light of recent mass fatal shootings, the graffiti “raised some red flags,” and the school was closed in an abundance of caution, Robinson said.

The Vallejo City Unified School District posted an emergency parent notification on its website on Wednesday morning about the threat and school closure, calling it a “potential terrorist threat,” but police said they believe there is no credible threat of terrorism from the graffiti.

There are no surveillance cameras in the area that was spray-painted, Robinson said.

Students at Elmer Cave were given the option Thursday of attending Vallejo Charter School at 2833 Tennessee St., he said.

Elmer Cave Language Academy has the goal of preparing every student there to become bilingual and bi-literate, according to the school’s website.
