Who's Who in Benicia: Rem Djemilev
Maestro to start youth orchestra for Benicia kids.

Where are you from? I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and then moved with my family to Moscow, Russia.
How did you end up in Benicia? In 1990, I graduated from Moscow conservatory and moved to United States with my string quartet. I lived in San Francisco at first then moved to Benicia when I met my wife, Ann, who already lived in here.
How long have you been in Benicia? I have lived here for five years with my wife and stepdaughter.
How old are and how old to you feel? I am 47 years old and I've been playing music and teaching young students all my life. That's probably why I don't feel or notice how old I am. Working with students is always exciting for me, it's energizing and refreshing every day.

What do you do? I am the conductor of the Young People's Chamber Orchestra in Berkeley and Diablo Regional Youth Orchestra in Walnut Creek. I am also a string coach at several schools and teach private lessons on the violin, viola, and piano.
What's next? Beginning September 2011, I will be starting an orchestra through . Rehearsals will be Monday afternoons at the Clock Tower.

Do you participate in any community events? I performed for several community events here in Benicia with my stepdaughter, Clodagh.
What do you do for fun? When I rarely have time off, I love going to the coast with my family or watching my stepdaughter perform on the violin at her school concerts.
What do most people not know about you? That I also enjoy working with electronics.
What are your favorite places in Benicia? The Clock Tower, The 2nd Street Grill and the beautiful waterfront.
What do you love about Benicia? I love the community spirit and the wholesome atmosphere of Benicia.
