Woman Extricated From Car After I-80 Crash With Big-Rig 'Lucky To Be Alive'

The driver's car was partially under the truck and pinned against the median wall, responders said. (Breaking)

SOLANO COUNTY, CA – A vehicle spinout on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in Vallejo Thursday morning caused a crash that pinned a woman in her car when it was hit by a big-rig, fire officials said.

The big-rig, which was hauling cattle feed, swerved to avoid a pickup truck that spun out near Georgia Street. The big-rig then collided with a Toyota Scion, Vallejo Fire Engineer Danny Gutierrez said.

The Scion was wedged between the big-rig and the concrete center median and was also partially under the big-rig. Firefighters had to cut away parts of the Scion, including a door, and remove the middle-aged driver
through one side of the car, Gutierrez said.

Firefighters couldn't roll back the roof of the Scion to remove the driver, who was pinned against the driver's seat, because the roof was crushed, but they were able to push back the driver's seat. The extrication
took about 25 minutes, according to Gutierrez.

"There was zero room for the driver to move. She's very lucky to be alive," he said.

The big-rig driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Kaiser Vallejo Medical Center, Gutierrez said.

The Scion driver, who was conscious through the extrication, went to NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield.
