Youth Commission Helps Girls Get to Prom in Style in Affordable Dresses

The commission is helping girls look good for the big night without the need for a big money layout.

The Benicia Youth Commission has been collecting dresses every Tuesday for the last few weeks for Project Prom.

Benicia Youth Commissioner Heidi Wing says Project Prom, based on San Francisco's Princess Project, is something community members wanted for southern Solano County high school girls so the Benicia Youth Commission took on the project.

Girls donate gently used dresses, which are then given to other girls to help offset the cost of prom. The dress selection event is this Friday, March 9, 3-6 p.m. at the Benicia Community Center, 370 East L Street.

The event is free to Benicia and Vallejo students with current school IDs. Students will have the opportunity to try on dresses in order to find their ideal dress for prom.

"We got way more dresses than I thought we would,” said Benicia Youth Commission's Natalie Sugiyama.  “I think it's great that there are so many beautiful dresses that girls can choose from."
