2 Women Arrested For Attempted Murder In Hit-And-Run Crash

The crash late Monday closed San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley for more than 7 hours.

BERKELEY, CA — Two women have been arrested for attempted murder, and felony assault with enhancements for great bodily injury following a hit-and-run crash late Monday night that closed San Pablo Avenue for over 7 hours as police investigated the crime. The victim underwent emergency surgery.

Mamie Purnell 39, and Raine Wooten 32, both of Berkeley, are charged in the case.

Investigators determined that there was a physical altercation between the victim and the two suspects prior to the crash. According to police, "Investigators learned the victim had been brutally assaulted by two suspects who left the victim laying in the roadway. Moments later, a vehicle traveling northbound struck the victim. The driver of this vehicle did not stop."

Purnell and Wooten were detained the following morning. Detectives served search warrants at both of their residences and recovered evidence related to the assault.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against the women on Thursday. Purnell faces an additional charge of committing a felony while out on bail.
