20-Year-Old Man to be Charged with Murder for Slaying of Emeryville Muralist

A 20-year-old man will be charged with murder for the fatal shooting of an artist working on a community mural project in West Oakland in September, Alameda County prosecutors said today. Prosecutors expect to charge Marquise Holloway later today with murder and robbery for the death of Antonio Ramos, a 27-year-old Emeryville resident who was shot at about 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 29 in the 3500 block of West Street, Assistant District Attorney Micheal O’Connor said.

Holloway is set for arraignment at 2 p.m. in Alameda County Superior Court, according to jail records. Ramos was working on a 4,000-square-foot mural underneath the Interstate Highway 580 overpass when he was shot. He was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, Oakland police said.

The West Street mural is part of the Oakland Super Heroes Mural Project, a collaboration between artists and local students organized by the nonprofit ArtEsteem. The mural was designed by students from West Oakland Middle School through the art education organization Attitudinal Healing Connection. Work continued on it despite Ramos’ death, finishing with an unveiling ceremony on Oct. 21.

Holloway was arrested Friday afternoon and is being held under no-bail status, according to jail records.
