Adopt a Kitten at Half Price Saturday at Berkeley Animal Shelter

The Berkeley Animal Shelter and Hopalong Animal Rescue are hosting a "Kitten Adoption Extravaganza" on Saturday, Aug. 17, when about 30 kittens will be available at a half price, $50 each, with coupons for pet supplies and medical exams.

Looking for a kitten to adopt?

The Berkeley Animal Shelter is hosting its first "Kitten Adoption Extravaganza" with kittens available at half price ($50) this Saturday. The event, in cooperation with Hopalong Animal Rescue, lasts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Approximately 30 kittens, between the ages eight weeks to six months, will be available for adoption at a discounted price of $50. The kittens – already spayed/neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped – will be ready to go home the same day.

"Kittens are born seasonally from late spring to summer," said Amelia Funghi, Community Service Coordinator at the Berkeley Animal Care Services. "The challenge we face now is that all the kittens are coming of age at the same time, so we are trying to boost adoption," she said.

This "Kitten Adoption Extravaganza" will be the first discounted adoption event that Berkeley Animal Care Services has hosted.

For anyone adopting a pet, Berkeley Animal Care Services provides a 20 percent-off coupon for Pet Food Express on 1101 University Avenue as well as a coupon for free medical exams at participating local vets.

There will also be a free barbecue in the parking lot during the adoption event.

The Berkeley Animal Shelter houses stray or abandoned domestic animals from Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville, and Piedmont and provides adoption services to find them a new home. Anyone can adopt a pet. Here's how:

1. Bring a valid form of identification
2. Bring proof that your home can house a pet (either a lease agreement allowing pets or proof of home ownership)
3. Bring the application fee: $125 for dogs, $100 for cats, $25 for rabbits, birds and exotics, and $10 for rodents. (The price for cats will be $50 during Saturday's "Kitten Adoption Extravaganza.")
4. Fill out an application at the shelter.

The Animal Shelter at the City of Berkeley is located on 1 Bolivar Drive and is open seven days a week (Mon-Sat: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wed: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sun: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
