Alten Construction manages reactivation of AC Transit maintenance facility

Alten Construction has finalized the reactivation and modernization of a bus maintenance facility in Richmond, California.

Alten Construction (AltenConstruction.com), a full-service San Francisco Bay area commercial construction company, has finalized the reactivation and modernization of a six-acre bus maintenance facility in Richmond, Calif., for the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, known as AC Transit.

The existing facility was unoccupied for several years, and the reactivation and modernization included the installation of new maintenance equipment, service equipment and fueling stations with fuel monitoring, which will allow employees to track how much fuel was used by each vehicle. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Jan. 27 to celebrate its completion.

The $10.8 million project was designed by Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture and also entailed seismic and structural upgrades and remodeling mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning infrastructure. Finishes were restored throughout the facility, from flooring and ceilings to walls and partitions. Alten Construction improved the lighting and security across the site as well.

The maintenance facility will be used for washing and servicing buses and includes five major bus lifts. Four lifts will be used for servicing the buses and one lift is in the chassis wash, used for raising buses into the air so the undercarriage can be washed.

The large parking lot on the site will be used for storing dozens of AC Transit buses. Alten Construction managed the reorientation of some underground utilities and the repaving of the concrete parking lot.

Bus drivers will use the facility as a base of operations, leaving for routes from the site and returning to the site when their route is completed. Office staff and mechanics will also use the facility on a daily basis.
