Construction on Sonoma County’s new Fleet and Materials Lab facility was recently completed by Alten Construction (AltenConstruction.com), a full-service San Francisco Bay area commercial construction company.
The 21,000-square-foot facility at 709 Russell Ave. in Santa Rosa, Calif., will be used for servicing the county’s fleet of vehicles and for testing and analysis of soil and paving materials. The facility includes a full-service automobile garage with nine vehicle lifts, a parking lot with about 300 parking spaces for county vehicles, offices and a mechanical lab testing facility.
The Fleet and Materials Lab, which was designed by Kwan Henmi Architecture & Planning, was built sustainably by Alten Construction, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building certification is pending. The facility includes electric charging stations for 22 county vehicles.

During the project, Alten Construction worked with several local Sonoma County subcontractors. Dreier Fire Protection from Sebastopol installed the fire sprinkler system; Baswell Electrical Construction from Windsor was responsible for the electrical systems; CBS Plumbing and Heating from Santa Rosa did the plumbing systems; Serres Corporation from Sonoma handled earthwork, utilities and paving; and West Coast Drywall from Santa Rosa did the metal framing and drywall work.
In the coming weeks, a time capsule will be installed at the facility. Alten Construction is contributing items to the time capsule, including current newspaper articles and letters to children and grandchildren. The time capsule will be buried outside the front entrance to the building and county officials are planning on opening it in 10 to 20 years.
