Weather forecast:
1. Gwyneth's goop launches ‘Berkeley' location in Oakland, and a crossing-the-bridge noodles specialist comes to town (berkeleyside.org) — Two new spots have just opened in downtown Berkeley: Dropo Sushi, offering grab-and-go sushi and halo-halo, and Ten Seconds Yunnan Rice Noodles, specializing in crossing-the-bridge noodles. Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop kitchen is also now delivering its “Berkeley”–branded, gluten- and seed-oil-free meals into Berkeley from an Oakland food hall.
2. Berkeley animal shelter could stay closed for months after fire (berkeleyside.org) — Berkeley’s city animal shelter near Aquatic Park is closed for at least three weeks, and possibly months, after a weekend fire damaged supplies, caused smoke damage, and disabled sprinklers, forcing all animals to be relocated. Adoptions, lost-and-found services, and walk-ins are paused, while Berkeley Humane is housing cats and kittens and both shelters are seeking towel, blanket, and monetary donations.
3. Aurora Theatre is back, with new leadership but no space — yet (berkeleyside.org) — Aurora Theatre Company, long based in downtown Berkeley, is planning a 2027–28 comeback under new artistic and managing directors but has confirmed it won’t return to its Addison Street venue. Leaders are using remaining assets and local support to rebuild, seek a new space that preserves Aurora’s intimate feel, and stabilize finances after pandemic-era deficits and a canceled season.
4. New AI and the Practice of Law Course Offers Students More Than 100 Hours of Hands-On Training (berkeley.edu) — Berkeley Law is launching a new fall course that gives 2L and 3L students over 100 hours of hands-on training using AI tools like Claude while emphasizing judgment and ethics. The class, led by Berkeley Center for Law & Technology director Wayne Stacy, aims to keep Berkeley students ahead of law firms in using AI without undermining foundational legal skills.
5. FIRE blasts UC Berkeley after protesters shut down Google scientist's lecture (campusreform.org) — UC Berkeley is under scrutiny from free-speech group FIRE after pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted and shut down a May 1 campus lecture by Google chief scientist Jeffrey Dean. FIRE argues the university allowed a “heckler’s veto,” while Berkeley officials say protesters violated campus rules and are reviewing how to better protect future events and expression.
