Mother And Son Arrested In Berkeley Shooting That Left Woman Seriously Injured: Police

BERKELEY, CA — A 19-Year-old Hayward man who police say shot his ex-girlfriend in the face in Berkeley last month was arrested on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Police say Darius Tate was arguing with his ex-girlfriend at a home in the 2900 block of Adeline Street sometime around 11 p.m. on June 14.

Tate started attacking his ex inside the home, and when she left to try to get into her car, he shot her, according to the Berkeley Police Department.

Tate then went through the car and stole cash before being picked up by his mother, who brought him a change of clothing to "evade capture," police said.

The woman was seriously injured, but survived the shooting, police said, adding that she is still recovering.

Tate, meanwhile, eluded authorities until Wednesday, when they served a warrant at an apartment complex in San Leandro, police said.

There, members of the Berkeley Police Department's Special Response Unit took Tate into custody on suspicion of attempted murder, robbery, domestic violence and carrying a loaded firearm, authorities said.

While searching the apartment, detectives found two loaded handguns and evidence believed to be connected to the shooting, police said.

His mother, Ann Fernandez, 53, was taken into custody at a separate location in San Leandro on suspicion of being an accessory after the commission of a felony, police said.
