RICHMOND, CA — For several years, Cash helped the Richmond Police Department solve violent crimes and uncover illegal drugs in the community.

Cash was more than just a K9, police said. He was a trusted partner and an example of dedication and loyalty.

"Cash's service went far beyond the badge," police said. "The dedication and teamwork shared between K9 Cash and both of his partners made a lasting impact on our community."

On Friday, the dedicated German Shepherd called it a career. The Richmond Police Department said it celebrated Cash's career alongside his coworkers, giving him "a well-deserved special treat in recognition of his years of dedicated service."

Cash began his career with another office seven years ago, and they built a "strong and successful working relationship."
police said.

When that chapter came to a close, Cash was partnered with Officer Charles, police said.

"When that chapter came to an end, Officer Charles had the great opportunity to take over as Cash's partner," police said.

Together, they worked to locate suspects, solve crimes and take drugs off Richmond streets, police said.

It's unclear what's next for Cash. Photos posted by the Richmond Police Department show him wearing a blue sash with "retired" across it. He can also be seen eating white cake with little treat bones.

"It was a fitting way to honor a K9 who has given so much to our department and our community," police said. "Enjoy retirement—you've earned it!"
