EL CERRITO, CA — A man accused of being a lookout during a deadly shooting at a shopping center in El Cerrito was arrested Monday, police said.
Jacari Talifero Gibson, 18, of Richmond, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and robbery in connection with a shooting that left one person dead in El Cerrito on Sunday afternoon.
Police believe the victim may have been targeted, according to a KTVU report.
Officers responded to a call around 12:15 p.m. about a shooting at Del Norte Plaza in the 11200 block of San Pablo Avenue, police said.
A young man had been shot near Los Moles restaurant and died of his wounds, according to police.
Witnesses reported that the victim and suspects were engaged in an altercation at the man's car when he was shot, police said. After the shooting, the suspects fled south in a dark sedan on South 56th Street, according to police.
Gibson, according to police and KTVU, served as a lookout for the shooter, who police have yet to locate as of Tuesday.
The 18-year-old was located in Richmond at around 1:20 p.m. Officers served a warrant at his home, but it's unclear if they found any evidence related to the shooting, police said.
The shooting came on the heels of El Cerrito removing the last of its Flock cameras.
The El Cerrito Police Department Chief Paul Kieth told KTVU that the lack of Flock cameras has slowed down the investigation, at least as far as identifying the suspect vehicle.
Surveillance cameras near the scene of the crime captured the vehicle, but police weren't able to get the license plate number from that footage, authorities said.
"Investigators collaborated with regional jurisdictions to identify a license plate for the suspect vehicle, thanks to Flock Safety and Vigilant ALPR cameras," police said in a statement on Monday. "This information proved essential in identifying the vehicle used by the suspects to flee the scene. El Cerrito Investigators placed the vehicle on a statewide alert list."
The vehicle used in the shooting was located more than 24 hours later by Vallejo Police officers, authorities said.
