Suspect Arrested In Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed Beloved 81-Year-Old Richmond Man

RICHMOND, CA — A suspect was arrested Sunday in connection with the fatal hit-and-run crash that left a beloved 81-year-old Richmond resident dead, authorities said.

Don Mack, 66, of Richmond, was taken into custody on suspicion of hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter and driving with a suspended license, police said.

Mack crashed into 81-year-old Rafael Delgado, who was walking through a marked crosswalk on 23rd Street near Helllings Avenue around 8:30 p.m. on the night of Sunday, Aug. 23, according to the Richmond Police Department.

Mack continued driving without stopping, police added.

Investigators used video footage, video-surveillance systems, and automated license plate reader technology to identify Mack as a suspect, police said.

Authorities also found the car used in the crash abandoned in Richmond on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and found it was registered to Mack, police said.

"Mr. Delgado was well known," Richmond Police Lt. Joseph England said during a press conference announcing the arrest on Monday, according to KRON4. "This community is suffering."

The case remains under investigation, police said.
