Officer Shot While Responding To East Bay Mental Health Check

RICHMOND, CA — An officer was hospitalized Thursday after being shot while responding to a mental health check call in Richmond, authorities said.

Police say the suspect shot the first officer on the scene at the 2200 block of Key Boulevard around 6:41 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect then barricaded themselves inside a home, according to the Richmond Police Department.

Authorities took the officer to a local hospital, where they are currently listed in stable condition, police said.

The suspect, meanwhile, continued firing shots from inside the home, striking neighboring homes and a squad car, police said, adding that nobody else was injured.

The standoff prompted police to call in SWAT and a crisis negotiator, police said.

The RPD Crisis Negotiations Team responded and established contact with the suspect in an attempt to bring this incident to a peaceful resolution," police said in a statement Thursday night. "Chemical agents were also deployed in an
effort to gain the suspect's compliance."

The suspect eventually exited the home and was taken into custody, authorities said.

"We are extremely grateful that our officer is in stable condition and expected to survive," police said. "We are also thankful that no residents or assisting personnel were injured despite the significant danger created by the suspect's indiscriminate gunfire."

Police did not release the suspect's identity. The case remains under investigation, police said. It's unclear what potential charges the suspect may face.

The shooting came hours after an officer and a suspect were shot inside a holding cell in Contra Costa County.

In that case, both are also expected to survive, authorities said.
