Police responded to the scene, where officer Justin Church was immediately struck by gunfire. Police say several squad cars and homes were also hit by gunfire during the standoff.

Church is continuing to recover from his injuries, the Richmond Police Department said on Tuesday.

The department posted a photo with him in a wheelchair in the days after the shooting. A bandage is seen on his arm as he gives two thumbs up

"We are thankful that despite the extraordinary level of gunfire and danger presented during this incident, our officer survived, our A3 partners were unharmed, and no members of our community were injured," police said.

The shooting came hours after an officer and a suspect were shot inside a holding cell in Contra Costa County.
