A Photographer Who Kept Her Life's Work Secret Finally Gets Her Big Show (hautelivingsf.com) — UC Berkeley's Magnes Collection is hosting a two-part exhibition of photographer Nancy Lee Katz's once-private portraits, showcasing 133 images of cultural icons she never shared during her lifetime. After a VIP preview on campus, the show is now open to the public, with part one running through December 17 and part two scheduled from January 19 to May 13, 2027.
2. Gail Hernandez Rosa Awarded for Musical Performance (sonomastatestar.com) — A recent performance at the Berkeley Early Music Festival helped Sonoma State violinist Gail Hernández Rosa and her ensemble Beneath a Tree earn major audience-choice awards from San Francisco Classical Voice. She explains how historically informed performance, gut strings, and small ensembles shape her sound, and notes that her group's new album, Musings, is scheduled for release on October 30, 2026.
3. The Denisovans who interbred with modern humans were already hybrids. UC Berkeley researchers inferred that 3 to 5 percent of their DNA came from an unidentified hominin lineage that diverged from our (scienceblog.com) — UC Berkeley researchers have used a new genome-analysis method to suggest Denisovans carried DNA from an even older, unidentified human lineage, traces of which still persist in some modern populations. Their work, based on sophisticated statistical modeling rather than new fossils, strengthens evidence that human evolution involved repeated interbreeding among deeply diverged groups and highlights Berkeley's role in pushing this complex story forward.
4. Roundtable 18-3 on Gavin, Thinking Historically (issforum.org) — UC Berkeley's Daniel J. Sargent features prominently in a new roundtable discussing Francis Gavin's book on how historical thinking can improve modern statecraft and strategy. The extensive forum explores why policymakers should draw more deeply on history, how UC Berkeley-style scholarship fits into that effort, and what limits historical thinking may have when guiding real-world decisions.
