3 Arrested, 17 Cited During Berkeley DUI Checkpoint: Police

BERKELEY, CA — Three people were arrested, and 17 others were cited during a DUI checkpoint on Thursday, police said.

Police say 947 drivers passed through the checkpoint at Shattuck Avenue and Parker Street on Thursday, Sept. 24, with 14 being cited for operating a car without a license or while their license was suspended, police said.

Three others were cited for other violations, according to the Berkeley Police Department. Police did not elaborate on what those violations were.

Two drivers were taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence while another was arrested for outstanding felony warrants, police said.

Another 28 drivers were evaluated during the checkpoint and released, police said.

"DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes," police said. "The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are conducted to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads."
