BERKELEY, CA — A 22-year-old Richmond man was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Berkeley last week that left two people seriously hurt, police said.
Farhan Ayubi, 22, of Richmond, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of two counts of felony hit-and-run, the Berkeley Police Department said Tuesday afternoon.
The charges stem from a crash on Wednesday, Oct. 7, near University Avenue and Eighth Street, police said.
Ayubi was driving in the area around 9 p.m. when he hit a 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman walking in the area, and didn't stop, police said.
The impact of the crash left the man and woman with serious injuries, and they remain in critical condition, authorities said.
Investigators linked the 22-year-old to the crash using Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology in Berkeley and Emeryville, along with security footage from nearby businesses, police said.
Police say officers used the evidence to secure a warrant for Ayubi's arrest.
"We want to thank the alert witness whose assistance helped move this investigation forward, as well as our community for its patience and continued support," police said.
