uBe Gallery defies trends, opens in Berkeley

Featured art reflects owner's taste for beauty and whimsy while environment invites visitors to stay awhile

BERKELEY, Calif. – June 19, 2015 – Ignoring the thinning number of Bay Area art galleries and what it might mean, uBe Gallery is opening its doors on June 26 in Berkeley. Located on San Pablo Avenue among a busy cluster of shops, restaurants, and open studio spaces, uBe Gallery promises to offer art at accessible prices in an environment designed to be welcoming.

“Traditional art galleries continue to intimidate art newbies,” said Winn Taylor, uBe Gallery’s proprietor and curator. “My goal is to create an environment where there’s no awkward silence, where browsing and conversation is welcomed, and where people can hang out with the art for a while. I want visitors to just BE with the art.” To this end, uBe Gallery features music and provides cozy seating.

An artist herself, Taylor goes a step further to differentiate uBe Gallery from traditional galleries, eschewing exclusivity and giving artists a higher-than-normal percentage. The opening exhibition covers a wide spectrum of medium, genre and subject matter, that ranges from simply beautiful to whimsically twisted. The work is a reflection of Taylor’s personal taste.
