Berkeley Launches New Law Center

The Berkeley Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice will provide input to lawmakers and regulators.

BERKELEY, CA -- The University of California at Berkeley law school is launching a new center focused on consumer law, university officials said. The Berkeley Center for Consumer Law and Economic Justice will provide input to lawmakers and regulators on behalf of low-income consumers, increase opportunities for students to do hands-on policy work, produce white papers and file amicus briefs in consumer cases.

Amicus briefs provide relevant, additional information or arguments that an appellate court might want to consider.

University officials are hoping that the center will make the law school a national and global leader in the study, practice and research of consumer law.

University officials said the center will host the country's only conference of consumer law clinics and hold the first-ever conference for consumer law scholars.
