Berkeley: Loaded Handgun Found During Traffic Stop

Berkeley, California (Wednesday, February 10, 2021) - On February 2nd at 2:02 am, an officer was driving south on MLK Jr Way (near Derby Street) when they saw a vehicle drive passed them at 50+ mph (in the rain)—northbound on MLK Jr Way (the speed limit is 25 mph). After making a U-turn and driving after the vehicle, the officer was able to stop the vehicle a few blocks away.

When officers contacted the driver and passenger, they could smell that someone had recently been smoking marijuana inside and the driver acknowledged that he had been smoking marijuana while driving.

When officers searched the vehicle, they found a large zip-lock bag of marijuana (about 50 grams) as well as a loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine.

The suspects (an 18-year-old Stockton man and a 19-year-old Oakland man) were arrested on suspicion of several weapon-related charges.
