BERKELEY, CA — The Berkeley Police Department plan to hold a DUI checkpoint this Friday night.

The checkpoint will be conducted between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. near the intersection of Ashby Avenue and 9th Street.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," said Police Sgt. Dave Harston. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety."

Officers will also look for signs of impairment from prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. Also, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to BPD.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
