Dear BUSD Community,

I’m writing to invite middle and high school families and students to attend online Town Halls this week. I’m looking forward to sharing a preliminary plan for hybrid learning and getting your feedback.

While Alameda County remains in the “Purple” Tier of COVID-19, schools may not reopen for hybrid learning models, and it remains to be seen whether disease conditions over the winter will allow us to consider openings in January, as we had hoped for our elementary schools. Due to the greater complexity of opening secondary school campuses compared to elementary schools, the Board of Education has not yet established a formal target date for middle and high schools for reopening. That said, we continue to make progress toward preparations for opening, so that when local conditions permit, we could be ready to safely reopen.

We are hosting a series of meetings to share our progress and ask for your feedback, and I hope you’ll attend. Here are the meeting dates, times, and links for these meetings.

We will also send families and high school students an online survey that will mirror the questions we ask in these meetings. We will also continue to report our progress at regular intervals, and look forward to hearing from you about these important matters. I hope you will check Berkeley Unified’s Reopening Readiness Dashboard for more information about the district’s continued preparations.

Sincerely,
