Our upcoming concerts at Hertz Hall on the UC Berkeley campus Friday May 30, 7:30 pmSaturday May 31, 3:00 pm Sunday June 1, 3:00 pm feature a rarely heard Russian masterpiece by Sergei Taneyev, St John of Damascus, and another hidden gem by Saint-Saens, his Requiem. Ming Luke, music director, says "St. John of Damascus was Taneyev's first published work. It immediately placed him in the upper echelons of composers during his day. " This is only the second time the Taneyev has been performed in northern California. The Saint-Saens Requiem has soloists and chorus echoing each other in soaring vocal lines with an effect both lucid and poignant. BCCO promises you a transcendent spiritual experience through the music of these rarely heard works of power and polyphonic genius.
