About the event

Every mystery reader has a type. Maybe you want the corpse discovered by page ten and the killer unmasked in a drawing room. Maybe you want a small-town amateur sleuth, a suspicious casserole, and a cat with opinions. Maybe you want the kind of book that makes you check the locks twice.

Good news: we've got all three.

For one October evening, Book Society is handing the room over to three Bay Area mystery authors who write very different flavors of crime. Gigi Pandian writes locked-room mysteries the New York Times called "wildly entertaining," plus a cozy fantasy series featuring an actual gargoyle. Carmela Dutra writes food truck cozies steeped in family, farmers' markets, and the pursuit of the perfect chicken wing. M.M. Chouinard writes bestselling thrillers, including The Serial Killer Guide to San Francisco series — and holds a Ph.D. in developmental psychology, which is either reassuring or not, depending on how you look at it.

They'll talk shop with each other and with you: how you build a puzzle a reader can actually solve, when a red herring is clever and when it's cheating, what makes cozy cozy and thriller thrilling, how much research a murder really requires, and why this particular corner of California — fog, hills, tech money, tourists — keeps turning up as the scene of the crime.

Come for the plotting secrets, stay for the wine, leave with a stack of books and at least one new theory about your neighbors.

Your ticket includes:

  • A lively conversation between Gigi Pandian, Carmela Dutra, and M.M. Chouinard
  • Lite bites and pours (NA option available)
  • Book signing, mingling, and good company, Book Society–style

Copies of all three authors' books will be available for purchase at the event. A limited number of copies will be available at the store in advance if you want to do some pre-reading!
