Cheap Thrills: Candy Shopping at Powell's Sweet Shoppe

For goodies galore, pay a visit to this legendary candy store.

With its giant jawbreakers, oversized lollipops, and jumbo gumballs, is like something out of a Willy Wonka fantasy. Entering the cavernous store, patrons are bedazzled by the array of goodies. Every surface winks and glitters with the colorful candies on display. Whatever satisfies your sweet-tooth — be it Pink Popcorn, Pop Rocks, or filling-pullers like Big Hunks, Laffy Taffy, or Now-Or-Laters—Powell’s probably carries it.

Box upon box of confectionery delight is offered, stacked high and wide and in reach of eager — and excited — young hands. Nostalgic candy (remember Chick-O-Sticks?) causes murmurs of recognition among the adults, who despite their age, often run alongside their children in eager anticipation and halting indecision. Shopping baskets are conveniently offered so you can hold your booty as you select it, keeping your hands free for further candy inspection.

So, pick an afternoon, swing by Powell’s, and stop in for a quick acquisition (or two). Bring a friend, or better yet, a kid, and let them loose to enjoy the unadulterated joy of a candy store. Just remember to brush your teeth.
