Cheap Thrills: The Berkeley Skate Park
Grab your helmet and head down to the Berkeley Skate Park for a morning of high-energy excitement.
First thing on a Saturday morning, while the fog still blankets the bay and dew clings to the grass, slip on a hoodie, grab your helmet, and head down to the Berkeley Skate Park.
Located in the industrial wasteland of West Berkeley, the city-run Skate Park is a concrete nirvana for skaters. Contained behind a ribbon of chain-link fencing, the undulating terrain — including a bowl, box, curbs, humps, and hips — is perfectly suited for skateboarders of all ages and skill levels.
Upon arrival, the slapping, thudding echo of wood smacking against the pavement reverberates across the park, breaking open the early morning silence and heralding the excitement to come. Old-school skaters shadow their kids around the shallow section with unbridled enthusiasm, passing on the tricks and techniques of a previous generation and watching with pride as their offspring catch the contagious skater spirit. Teens—clad in the requisite uniform of low-slung pants, Vans, and beanies—huddle on the hip and compare moves while beginners, balanced precariously on their boards, rolls past tentatively.

The park starts to fill up around noon, with a more driven and competitive crowd taking over and throwing off a tougher vibe — best to come earlier for a calmer, less crowded visit. Pack a few snacks — and your pads — and enjoy an hour or two of frontside grinding excitement during a morning session at the Berkeley Skate Park.
