UC Berkeley Hit By Cyberattack: Officials

"Until further notice, please do not attempt to access Canvas through any browser or device," university officials said.

BERKELEY, CA — Berkeley officials warned students to stay off the university's learning management system after being hit with a cyberattack.

University officials announced the issue Thursday afternoon, saying the issue was impacting institutions across the world and that they were "actively monitoring the situation."

"Until further notice, please do not attempt to access Canvas through any browser or device," University of California, Berkeley Vice Provost Oliver M. O'Reilly said in a statement. "If you are currently logged in, please close your browser immediately without clicking any links."

It's unclear how this will impact students using bCourses, the university's digital platform for course content, as they prepare for finals week.

Officials say they are currently exploring other paths for students and staff to access information. For now, students should await direction from their instructors on how they will proceed with the course material amidst the cyberattack, officials said.

Officials did not say who was behind the cyberattack.

Staff at the DailyCal say the newspaper received a statement from ShinyHunters, a black-hat cybercrime group, claiming to have stolen hundreds of thousands of records containing student and staff information.

"Affected institutions also have the opportunity to reach out to us to prevent the release of the data since Instructure is being non-transparent and seemingly does not care for its customers." ShinyHunters said, according to the DailyCal. "All (data) will be leaked by 12 May 2026 except the ones that pay."
