Detective Fatally Shoots Man On East Bay Freeway: Police
The shooting happened on Thursday along the westbound I-80 near Richmond, authorities said.
RICHMOND, CA — An investigation is underway after a detective shot and killed a manalong the I-80 Freeway near Richmond on Thursday morning, according to authorities.
California Highway Patrol had received reports that someone in a gold or gray Nissan sedan was driving recklessly on the freeway, hitting cars, and obstructing traffic, according to the Richmond Police Department.
A Richmond Police Department detective later found the Nissan stopped and blocking lanes on the highway. The officer stopped to see if aid needed to be rendered, and that's when they found a man outside of the car holding a metal object, police said.

An altercation broke out afterward between the two, and the officer shot the man, police said.
The man was taken to a local hospital, where they died from their injuries. The detective was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The California Department of Justice will lead the investigation into the shooting, due to it being unclear whether the man was wielding anything considered a weapon, police said.
The detective, who was wearing civilian clothes, was not required to wear a body camera, police told AB7.
"This investigation is in its early stages," The Richmond Police Department said in a statement Thursday evening. "We are committed to transparency and will provide updates as information becomes available and legally releasable."
