Presenting the music of legendary jazz composer Raymond Scott

Jazz musician and educator Jeff Sanford's sizzling 13-piece band brings the music of Raymond Scott to our stage. Inextricably etched on the subconscious of anyone who ever watched Saturday morning television, Scott's zany, wildly colored compositions provide the musical backdrop to numerous animations, from Looney Tunesand Merrie Melodies to Ren and Stimpy and The Simpsons.

Pianist, composer, and electronic music pioneer Scott was born in Brooklyn in 1908 and rose to prominence with his quirky, six-piece Quintette. Scott's eccentric, genre-hopping pieces, full of catchy melodies and hair-raising rhythmic shifts were immensely popular on radio, the concert stage, and film. Bandleader Jeff notes, "Raymond Scott was not writing for cartoons; these were his reflections of walking around New York in the '30s.''

Multi-reedman Jeff, who was inspired to take up Scott after hearing clarinetist Don Byron's 1996 "Bug Music" recording, tonight brings us a program featuring exhilarating, hauntingly familiar pieces including "Powerhouse", Huckleberry Duck", and "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals."
