Fire station renovation awarded to local construction company

Alten Construction (AltenConstruction.com), a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, has been awarded the contract to construct the new, state-of-the-art San Francisco Fire Department Station 5, a division station and one of the biggest and busiest fire stations in the city.
The current two-story fire station will be transformed into a much larger three-story building, which will house approximately 11 firefighters each day, with a total of roughly 55 firefighters stationed at the new 21,000-square-foot facility. It will also house one fire engine, one ladder truck and one Division Chief.

The design of the project will be completed by the Department of Public Works and incorporate high-quality living quarters for the firefighters, modern and upgraded technology and ventilation and exhaust systems for the apparatus bay.

“The fire department is looking forward to an updated and seismically safe station, which will provide a healthy working environment for our firefighters,” said Captain Stephen McPartlan. “The fire house’s interior will include a training area, modern kitchen, communication area and fitness area, and the new exterior will enhance the surrounding neighborhood and add to its existing character. It will also provide a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for community visits, school field trips, department-sponsored blood pressure screenings and our annual open house.”

The building will be designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s (LEED) Gold certification. The LEED scoring system provides a metric for measuring how sustainable a structure is. LEED-certified buildings are resource efficient, using less water and energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“The improved design of the facility will also reduce our response time and allow us to serve the community in a more efficient manner,” McPartlan said. “We thank the many people who made this project possible.”

Located at 1301 Turk St. in San Francisco, the $14.8 million project is scheduled to wrap up in fall/winter 2018.

Currently, 44 fire stations operate in the San Francisco Bay Area. During the update, the station’s current operations, response and coverage will be maintained and firefighters will be deployed from nearby stations.
