Police Warning: Scam Involving Student Loans

Police are not debt collectors, they say, so phone calls by "police" threatening you are a scam.

BERKELEY, CA — A University of California, Berkeley employee received a photo call on Monday from someone claiming to be a campus police officer. The caller told the woman that there were warrants out for her arrest for not paying back her student loans.

The suspicious employee refused to give the caller her credit card number or bank information. Instead, she called university police and reported the scam.

UCPD has issued this tip list to help you resist scam artists:

  • Scam/Con Artists use fear to extort money by pretending to be a government authority. They often request unusual means of payment or demand personal/confidential information.
  • If you believe you have received a scam phone call, hang up and verify the call with the claimed agency.
