Sheryl Sandberg Delivers Heartfelt Commencement Address (Video)

One year after the sudden loss of her husband, the Facebook executive gave graduates a blueprint for surviving adversity.

BERKELEY, CA - Some of the most inspirational words you'll ever hear are college commencement speeches. Steve Jobs told Stanford students in 2005, "How to Live Before You Die" and J.K. Rowling outlined "The Fringe Benefits of Failure" at Harvard.

This past weekend, UC Berkeley graduates were given a heartfelt commencement address by Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg.

It was just a year ago that Sandberg lost her husband, Dave Goldberg. Her speech to Berkeley’s graduating class marked the first time that she's spoken publicly about her grief, which she called a "deep fog."

"I learned about the depths of sadness and the brutality of loss," Sanberg told graduates. "But I also learned that when life sucks you under, you can kick against the bottom, break the surface, and breathe again. I learned that in the face of the void—or in the face of any challenge—you can choose joy and meaning."

She encouraged the graduates to build resilience, as they realized that "anchored deep within you is the ability to learn and grow."
