Summer Teen Writing Camps

Information on our teen writing camps for the summer of 2015

This summer, from June to August, we are pleased to announce that the Bay Area Writing Project will again be hosting writing camps for teenagers (incoming 9th – 12th) at UC Berkeley! Below are descriptions of the multiple camps and workshops that we are offering.

June 15 – June 26, 2015
(9:30 am – 12:30 pm)

Flash fiction is short! 500-750 words that tell a story. We will practice immersive and craft techniques or exercises borrowed from drama to produce work during and outside of the class, and follow a more in depth workshopping model in which participants question their own text, share it with others, and get feedback from a group setting. We will also explore opportunities for submission/publication.

The Personal Statement: From Zero to Bang! in 5 Days

Session 1:
June 22 – June 26, 2015

July 27 – July 31, 2015
(1:00 pm – 4:00 pm)

Excited about college, but scared of writing the personal statement for the application? Not sure how to show off your strengths without looking like, well, a show-off? Want to stand out as an individual without coming across as a weirdo? Struggle with writing in a way that is clear and coherent, yet innovative and interesting? Then this is the workshop for you! You will walk out of this workshop with a draft of your personal statement for both the Common App and the UCs. Just imagine, you could start your senior year with THIS crossed off your “To Do” List!

Teenage Reporter: Backpack Journalism in the 21st Century

June 29 – July 3, 2015
(9:00 am – 12:00 pm)

In this course we will explore the fundamentals of writing a strong article for the public eye. This includes developing our reporting skills by writing lead (headline or front page) news stories, opinion columns, personality profiles as well as a variety of other stories. Sports fans, don’t worry, the camp will also include day trip to the Oakland Coliseum for a visit to the press box and an A’s game.

Hack Your Notebook
(Open to incoming 5th – 10th graders)

July 6 – July 10, 2015
(9:00 am – 3:00 pm)

Hack your Notebook? 21st Century Notebooking? Illuminate your thinking……? What are you talking about? We’re talking about the newest way to share your stories with the world! Explore basic scientific concepts like conductivity, current flow, simple circuit design, and mechanical switches then use them to make your notebook stories come alive with electronic art. No background with technology necessary.

In this workshop you will:

Experience a writers’ workshop

Compose in a variety of genres

Learn basics of circuitry

Design innovative circuit projects

Going Graphic: Tell your story in words and pictures

July 6 – July 10, 2015
(12:00 pm – 4:00 pm)

In this week-long class, you will develop, illustrate and publish your own web comic. Two experienced and published graphic novelists will guide you and provide an introduction to the tools and techniques necessary to create your own graphic novels.

Rebellious Writing: Using the pen for social commentary and voice

July 13 – July 24, 2015 (9:30 am – 12:30 pm)

We will play with drama, spoken word, creative nonfiction, conceptual art, satire, and essay to unleash the social critic in us all. You will have the chance to write about your obsessions in pop culture: music, movies, art, celebrity, controversy, and viral/digital commentary. Love it- hate it? Nothing is safe from our lens. This is a class for opinionated risk-takers who aren’t afraid to tell it like they see it. Come find your people here.
